McMillan musher drops out of Iditarod

ANCHORAGE, AK (AP)--   Veteran U.P. musher Ed Stielstra has scratched from the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race.

Race officials say Stielstra, of McMillan, was injured training his dog team in late February. They officials say he decided to scratch then but wanted to fulfill his duties during the race's ceremonial start Saturday.  He scratched that afternoon at the Campbell Airstrip in Anchorage.

Stielstra has finished the Iditarod seven times, including 25th place last year.  He also finished in the top 30 two other years.  His Iditarod winnings total just under $15,000.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
