Skating rink, warming hut open in Marquette area

MARQUETTE, MI--   Getting out to enjoy winter recreation in the Marquette area has just gotten a bit easier.

The ice rink at the Marquette Commons is now open for the season.  Weather permitting, residents can skate for free Thursday through Sunday from noon to 8 p.m.  While skating is also available outside the posted hours, the warming house may not be open and groomed ice isn’t guaranteed.

And the Blueberry Ridge Ski Pathway warming hut is now officially open south of Marquette.  The state Department of Natural Resources partnered with the Superiorland Ski Club and Sands Township officials to build the structure, which cost around $200,000.  It’s located in the parking lot off the eastern side of M-553, about 6 miles south of Marquette.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
