Don't forget your ice shanties

MARQUETTE, MI--   The Department of Natural Resources is reminding anglers the deadlines to remove their ice shanties are approaching.

Regardless of the date, the structures must be removed as soon as the ice is unable to safely hold them.

On Michigan-Wisconsin boundary waters shanties must be removed by midnight Tuesday, March 15.  For all counties in the Upper Peninsula they have to be taken off the ice by midnight Thursday, March 31.

Anglers whose shanties fall through the ice face penalties of up to 30 days in jail and fines of up to $500.  If the structure is removed by a government agency the court can require the owner to reimburse the agency an amount of up to three times the cost of removal.
