Marquette Marathon establishing a name for itself

MARQUETTE, MI--   Organizers of the Marquette Marathon say it continues to get bigger and better.

This year’s marathon, half marathon, 5K, and kids race over the Labor Day weekend hosted more than 1,100 racers.  2016 was the event’s seventh year.  Officials say the first running included about 225 racers.

The full marathon is one of the last qualifying courses in the country before registration opens for the Boston Marathon.

Officials say they were able to donate $20,000 to organizations that provided volunteers for this year’s event.  Volunteers with 14 groups fulfilled various roles on the course.

Registration for the 2017 Marquette Marathon officially opened December 1.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
