US luge team staying home for the season

NEGAUNEE, MI--   The USA Luge Natural Track team is sitting out the entire 2020-2021 World Cup season.

Last week the team notified the International Luge Federation it would not compete due to concerns over COVID-19.

The team, comprised of athletes competing in the junior levels, will miss a total of 11 competitions slated to take place in Austria, Italy, Romania and Germany. Three Marquette sledders and one from Appleton, Wisconsin are impacted by the decision.

The team trains at a facility in Negaunee. Coach Keith Whitman says the sledders will spend the season competing at home and training up-and-coming lugers.

The team hopes to return to international competition next season.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
