UP, WI lugers to compete on world stage

Upper Peninsula Luge Club

NEGAUNEE, MI— Five natural track luge athletes who have been training in Negaunee are headed to Europe to compete in World Cup and World Championship races.

Senior team member Zane Farnsworth of Marquette and Junior team members Henry Anderson of Appleton, Wisconsin and Torrey Cookman, Katie Cookman and Kurt Bates—all of Marquette—depart for Munich, Germany on December 24.

The Junior team will prepare for their first competition in Winterlieten, Austria, while Farnsworth will move on to Umhausen, Austria. The lugers will represent the U.S. in World Championship and World Cup races throughout Europe through February.

The team did not compete last year because of the coronavirus. That, however, enabled them to train intensely on the world-class track in Negaunee.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
