Former MTU student achieves best American biathlon time ever at Beijing Olympics

BEIJING, CHINA— A Michigan Tech alumna has posted the best finish ever by an American in the Olympic biathlon.

Deedra Irwin of Pulaski, Wisconsin finished 7th in the women’s 15-kilometer individual skiing and shooting event in Beijing, China Monday. She hit 19 of 20 targets on the range, and finished just one minute, 1.4 seconds behind the gold medal-winner from Germany.

Irwin ran cross country and track and competed in Nordic skiing at Tech, where she got her bachelor's degree in exercise science in 2015.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
