Northern looking for new football coach

MARQUETTE, MI— NMU’S head football coach has resigned.

Kyle Nystrom led the program for five years, posting a 13-40 record.

Nystrom's squad completed the 2022 season on Saturday with a 33-11 victory at Lake Erie College. That put the team's record at 4-7 overall and 1-5 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

NMU Athletic Director Rick Comley says a national search for Nystrom's replacement will begin soon. The position will be posted on the NMU Career site, and review of applications will begin in December.

Comley also says he’ll begin to work on a search advisory committee. He notes current and incoming players, football alumni, and Wildcat football fans will have ample opportunity to meet and give input on the finalists during the interviewing period.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
