Suicide Bowl ski jumping tourney comes with changes this year

Ishpeming Ski Club

ISHPEMING, MI— The Ishpeming Ski Club’s 136th Annual Ski Jumping Tournament is being held next week, and some things have been tweaked for this year’s event.

Club Vice President Peter Copenhaver says the tournament at Suicide Hill is part of the Five Hills Tournament, or five clubs that invite national and international skiers to compete, typically for the U.S. Cup. He says some big changes have been made to this year’s event.

“January 20th, which is a Friday, will be our U.S. Cup Tournament, that’s going to be Friday evening, and then Saturday will be our Paul Bietila Memorial Tournament, which will be Saturday afternoon/Saturday evening. So, we have two days of jumping on a weekend.”

Up to 50 skiers—mostly from the U.S.—are expected to participate.

Copenhaver says parking will be extremely limited at the tournament, so officials are urging residents to take a free shuttle bus from Negaunee High School to the hill.
