Luce County sled dog race canceled

NEWBERRY, MI— The Tahquamenon Country Sled Dog Race will not be held this weekend due to lack of snow.

In a Facebook post, officials said the Newberry-area trails currently have less than an inch of snow and no substantial amount of snow is predicted in the ten-day forecast. They said there’s no way to ensure a safe race for the dogs and their mushers.

The race was also canceled last year for the same reason.

Officials are asking people to patronize area businesses and sponsors who would have benefitted from the running of the race.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
