Late snow forces cancelation of Junior event during Ishpeming Ski Jumping Tournament

ISHPEMING, MI— Mother Nature has created some kinks in getting Ishpeming’s 137th Annual Ski Jumping Tournament ready.

Late-season snow and frigid temperatures forced officials to focus on grooming the 90-meter hill. They couldn’t tend to the smaller hills, which means the Junior Tournament scheduled for Sunday has been canceled.

Ishpeming Ski Club Vice President Peter Copenhaver says Friday and Saturday will still offer great events. He says the skiers coming from the four divisions across the U.S. are highly skilled competitors.

“These are athletes that are nearing National Team contention. So, these will be representing the United States in future Olympic Games.”

Copenhaver notes the tournament raises all the revenue that operates the ski club throughout the year.

The opening ceremony for the U.S. Cup tournament starts at 6 p.m. Friday. For more information, go to www.ishskiclub.com.
