Noquemanon courses altered due to snowmelt

MARQUETTE COUNTY, MI— Warmer weather and melting snow have prompted changes to this weekend’s Noquemanon Ski Marathon.

Race Coordinator Nicole Dewald-Swenson says the 50K and 24K have been shortened to 23K. They’ll both start at the County Road 510 Trailhead in Negaunee and finish at the Forestville Trailhead. Participants will be bused to the start and from the finish line to the Superior Dome.

Dewald-Swenson notes race officials have really had to pivot this year.

“We have been working diligently on the racecourse to make sure that everything is safe for everyone and that we have a good amount of snow depth for everyone to ski on.”

More than 1,300 racers are registered for the various events.

Awards for the different groups will remain unchanged despite everyone skiing the same course.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
