Dave Shyiak hired as new NMU head hockey coach

MARQUETTE, MI— Northern Michigan University has selected a new head hockey coach.

Dave Shyiak helped lead Northern’s 1991 NCAA National Championship team. He was also an assistant coach for the Wildcats from 1995-2005.

Shyiak was head coach at the University of Alaska-Anchorage for eight years. He comes to NMU from Saint Cloud State University, where he has been serving as the associate head coach.

Athletic Director Rick Comley says Shyiak is “…the right person, at the right time, in the right place to lead Northern Michigan back to a national level of success."

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
