Northern Michigan University retires Steve Mariucci's jersey

Northern Michigan University

MARQUETTE, MI— Former NMU quarterback Steve Mariucci’s jersey has been retired.

The Wildcat was part of the 1975 football team that won the national championship and finished the season 13-1. When the team was honored during halftime of the October 11 football game, a symbolic number 18 jersey with Mariucci’s name was raised to the rafters of the Superior Dome. The ceremony capped off reunion events celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Wildcats’ NCAA Division II Championship.

Mariucci went on to work in various coaching positions in the NFL and eventually became an NFL Network analyst.

Longtime friend and MSU basketball coach Tom Izzo surprised Mariucci by attending the 50th anniversary dinner at the Northern Center Friday night.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
