Lady Hematites secure state basketball championship

ISHPEMING, MI— The Ishpeming girls’ basketball team has won the 2026 MHSAA Division 4 Championship.

The Hematites defeated Portland St. Patrick 48-28 at the Breslin Center at Michigan State University on Saturday. It was their second title in three years.

Mya Hemmer and Jenessa Eagle were standouts in the game. Hemmer had 18 points and 17 rebounds, while Eagle had 19 points and 11 rebounds. Eagle will join the Michigan Tech basketball team next year, and Hemmer has a volleyball scholarship at Baylor.

Police cars and fire trucks escorted the Hematites back to Ishpeming Saturday night and residents lined the streets to welcome the champions back home.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
