Kivela authors bill to keep CWD out of U.P.

LANSING, MI--   State Representative John Kivela has introduced a bill that would help prevent Chronic Wasting Disease from entering the U.P.

The bill would increase penalties for bringing a deer carcass from an area known to have CWD into the U.P.  Those who violate the restrictions would face fines of $500 to $2,000 and up to 90 days in jail.

CWD has not been found in the Upper Peninsula, but it has been identified in deer in Oneida County, Wisconsin, just 25 miles away from the Michigan border.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
