U.P. groups get deer habitat grants

MARQUETTE, MI--   The Michigan Department of Natural Resources has awarded 12 U.P. recipients $100,000 to upgrade conditions for deer. 

The Deer Habitat Improvement Partnership Initiative is a competitive grant program funded by hunting license sales for projects on non-state lands.  The DNR evaluated grant proposals based on criteria like project feasibility, willingness to share costs, and accessibility to the public. 

The recipients are:

Alger Conservation District - $10,000

Camp Josh Inc. - $4,786

Chippewa-Luce-Mackinac Conservation District - $10,000

Dickinson Conservation District - $10,000

Eastern Dickinson County Sportsmen’s Club - $2,479

Gogebic County Forestry and Parks Commission - $4,740

Gogebic Conservation District - $9,900

Iron-Baraga Conservation District - $12,620

Marquette Conservation District - $10,000

Ontonagon County Chapter of Whitetails Unlimited - $6,900

The Forestland Group and U.P. Whitetails Inc. - $10,000

Wildlife Unlimited of Iron County - $8,484 

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
