UP businessman ordered to destroy exotic swine

MARQUETTE, MI--   The owner of the Bear Mountain Lodge in Negaunee Township has until October 1 to get rid of wild swine on his property.

Greg Johnson owns ten Russian boars and lets people hunt them on his land.  He’s been in a six-year struggle with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, which says the pigs are an invasive species and need to be destroyed.

On Wednesday Marquette County Circuit Court Judge Thomas Solka upheld the ban on exotic swine and ordered Johnson to get rid of the boars.

There’s no word yet on whether Johnson will file an appeal.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
