Falcons thriving on U.P. bridges

HOUGHTON, MI--   Peregrine falcons are using U.P. bridges and student-built boxes to raise their young.

The Michigan Department of Transportation says a pair of the birds returned to nest on the Portage Lake

Lift Bridge this year and hatched three chicks. The Department of Natural Resources recently installed an upgraded nesting box built by Baraga Area Schools students on the bridge. Another will be installed before next nesting season.

Webcams have been installed in cooperation with the Copper Country Audubon Club to view the birds. They can be accessed at pasty.com/nestbox.html.

And another pair of peregrines nested on the International Bridge in Sault Ste. Marie. They hatched four chicks this year.

Officials say a falcon cam for that bridge is also planned.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
