Park road to close for salamander migration in Marquette

MARQUETTE, MI— The City of Marquette is closing a portion of Peter White Drive around Presque Isle Park starting Friday.

A collaboration with the Superior Watershed Partnership and NMU Biology Department, the closure will facilitate the safe migration of the blue-spotted salamander. The amphibian hibernates underground during the winter, but when it turns warm and rains, the salamander migrates to wetlands to reproduce.

Peter White Drive from the Ice Cream Store Pavilion to the gate north of the pavilion will close to vehicles daily at 8 p.m. The closure will last from March 15th to May 15th, or until the completion of the migration.

Road barricades will be placed and removed daily to prevent vehicles from driving through the migration area. Foot traffic will be permitted in the area during regular park hours.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
