DNR completes first goal in study of UP moose population

Michigan Department of Natural Resources

MARQUETTE COUNTY, MI— The Michigan Department of Natural Resources completed the first round of captures for a western U.P. moose study last week.

The study—a collaboration between the DNR, Keweenaw Bay Indian Community, and Northern Michigan University—will study the factors limiting population growth in the U.P.

The team met its primary goal of capturing and collaring 20 moose, including five calves, five bulls and ten cows. The tracking collars will help researchers learn more about the Upper Peninsula core moose population, which has been declining in recent years.

Next winter, researchers plan to capture and collar 40 more moose in Marquette County.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
