Veterans can get special designation on MI driver's licenses

LANSING, MI (AP)--   Michigan Governor Rick Snyder has signed legislation for veterans to get a special designation on their driver's license or state ID card.

The bills require Michigan's Secretary of State to include people's status as military veterans on licenses if they request it and haven't been dishonorably discharged. Supporters say the measures will help veterans obtain services and benefits without having to carry copies of discharge papers.

Snyder signed the bills Tuesday.  They take effect in May 2014.

The Senate Fiscal Agency estimates nearly $700,000 in new costs spread over a number of years to modify driver's licenses and state ID cards for veterans.
