James Priestap honored in Iron Mountain

IRON MOUNTAIN, MI (AP)--   A National Guard soldier who was killed while serving in Iraq in 2006 is being honored at a Veterans Administration facility in Iron Mountain. 

The circle drive at Oscar G. Johnson VA Medical Center is being named for Army Sgt. 1st Class James D. Priestap.

The soldier from the community of Hardwood died November 23, 2006, in Baghdad from small-arms fire while on duty at a checkpoint.

Priestap was assigned to the 46th Military Police Company in Kingsford. He also worked for the VA in Iron Mountain as a police officer.

A memorial service is planned for May 25 at the facility. 

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
