New program urges volunteerism in MI

MACKINAC ISLAND, MI (AP)--   Governor Rick Snyder has announced a new campaign aimed at encouraging Michigan residents to volunteer in their local communities.

Snyder announced the "Let's Do Something, Michigan!" initiative on Thursday from Mackinac Island, where he's attending a business conference.

Michigan residents can now sign up online to learn about and get matched up with volunteer opportunities throughout the state. People can also sign up by phone or text message.

Snyder says in a statement that people can help in many ways "from mentoring a young student or co-worker to working on a community project or cleaning up a neighborhood."

Snyder's office says his staff will follow up with people who sign up to ensure they get connected to a volunteer opportunity.
