TRAVERSE CITY, MI (AP)-- An expedition that gets under way this weekend hopes to solve one of the Great Lakes' most enduring mysteries.
A team of divers and scientists will inspect a site in northern Lake Michigan that could be the wreckage of the Griffin, a ship commanded by the French explorer La Salle. It disappeared on its maiden voyage in 1679 with a crew of six.
Expedition leader Steve Libert has sought the Griffin for three decades. While diving in 2001, he found a wooden timber that he thinks may have been part of the vessel.
After a lengthy fight with the state of Michigan, Libert has obtained a permit to conduct excavations at the site. His team hopes to find artifacts that could help determine whether it's really the Griffin.
