Bigger fireworks mean more caution needed

UNDATED--   A change in the Michigan fireworks law in the past year has State Police cautioning 4th of July celebrants.

In 2012 residents were legally allowed to buy more powerful fireworks—which troopers say can pose a serious fire and burn hazard.

To avoid injury, State Police say children should never be allowed to play with fireworks of any kind; only light devices outdoors on smooth, flat surfaces away from residential areas, dry leaves, and flammable materials; always keep a bucket of water nearby in case of malfunction; and never try to relight fireworks that have not fully functioned.
