MARQUETTE, MI-- A coalition of animal welfare, conservation, and Native American groups has launched another campaign to keep wolves from being hunted in the U.P.
Keep Michigan Wolves Protected wants to put another referendum on the 2014 ballot to repeal Public Act 2013, which gave the Michigan Natural Resources Commission—instead of lawmakers—power to name animals as a game species. The NRC approved a wolf hunt in certain areas of the Upper Peninsula for this fall.
KMWP intends to gather 225,000 signatures by late March to qualify for the ballot. Three meetings to train volunteers are being held in the U.P. this week.
