Snyder says job creation key to retaining people in MI

MARQUETTE, MI--   Governor Rick Snyder continued his tour of the U.P. with a stop in Marquette Wednesday morning.

He held a meeting about attracting and retaining talent in the Upper Peninsula.

Snyder says job creation remains the best way to keep people in the area, and technology is helping.

“And so we’ve created mitalent.org, a website that really shows people there are 50,000 open jobs in Michigan,” he says.  “So it’s really a combination of activities, because it’s really important to keep our young people here and have them find those great careers to they’ll stay here.”

The governor also commented on a second effort to block wolf hunting in Michigan.  He says he approves of the petition drive’s democratic process, but still believes the NRC should name game animals.

“The recent legislation that was passed was to delegate the authority to the Natural Resources Commission to do it on a scientific basis,” he says, “because isn’t that how we should make decisions with wildlife, to base it on good science?  And so I think that was the right thing to do.”

Snyder concludes his tour at the Upper Peninsula State Fair in Escanaba, where he’ll present an award to the U.P. Veteran of the Year.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
