Weather cuts electricity to thousands

MARQUETTE, MI--   Power companies are dealing with numerous outages in the Eastern and Western Upper Peninsula, thanks to strong storms that rolled across the region.

As of 6:30 Monday morning more than 1,600 WE Energies customers west of Ishpeming and along the Wisconsin border had no electricity.

Cloverland Electric Cooperative says around 6,600 customers were without power because of severe weather in the Eastern U.P.

Strong winds have downed trees and limbs, which have fallen on power lines.  Officials are reminding residents to stay away from downed lines and to assume that all lines remain energized.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
