Marquette trucking decision delayed

MARQUETTE, MI--   The Marquette City Commission is delaying a hearing on a proposed city trucking ordinance.

The Commission was to meet with the public Wednesday on the plan, which designates eight routes within the city and bans commercial trucks weighing more than 10,000 pounds from city roads.

City officials are emphasizing the need for safety.  They’re concerned large trucks will destroy roads like Sugarloaf Avenue and Wright Street, which would require millions of dollars to repair.

Commissioners say they’ve been meeting with Lundin Mining and other affected parties and may have created a partnership to solve the issue.

The hearing is delayed 90 days.  Marquette officials say in that time they’ll consider a new ordinance that eases restrictions on heavy trucks in the area.
