Christmas tree heading from U.P. to Lansing

Iron Mountain Daily News

IRON RIVER, MI (AP)--   A 68-foot tall spruce in Iron River has been cut down to be Michigan's state Christmas tree.

The Daily News of Iron Mountain reports the tree was felled Wednesday and will be displayed on the Capitol grounds in Lansing throughout the holiday season. Hundreds of spectators were on hand for the event.

The tree was donated by Jonny and Barbara Waara. Denny Olson of the Michigan Association of Timbermen spotted the tree and advised them to nominate it.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
