MARQUETTE, MI--   A new partnership is studying the feasibility of constructing a trucking bypass in northern Marquette.

The group consists of the Marquette County Road Commission, City of Marquette, Marquette Township, and the Eagle mine.  Officials say it was created to find a solution for the transportation needs of the mine and affected communities.

The partnership met November 5 to establish responsibilities, form a steering committee, and elect a working group.  Its first task will be to agree on a scoping study to evaluate the feasibility of designing, permitting, and constructing a bypass near the Board of Light and Power.  A tentative completion date for the study is February of 2014.

Mine officials also say they’re contributing up to $500,000 for a regional traffic study requested in a regional transportation “white paper”.
