Lower fee to mail WI Christmas trees to overseas military

MADISON, WI (AP)--   Wisconsin is waving its usual fee to mail live Christmas trees to active military members serving overseas.

The state Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection said Monday it will not charge its usual $50 fee. Mailing the trees will cost just the $6 charged by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

The department is encouraging people to mail the trees early since it can take a long time for them to reach their destination.

Trees shipped out of the country need to be accompanied by a phytosanitary certificate obtained through DATCP verifying that it is not carrying pests or diseases.

The department advises that soft-needled trees like balsams and Fraser firs ship best, and trees should be bundled as tightly as possible.
