Wolf take up to 11

MARQUETTE, MI--   Another wolf has been taken in Michigan’s first Upper Peninsula hunt.

Eleven animals were killed as of Monday, ten days into the season.

Hunters have until December 31 to take a total of 43 wolves from three U.P. management areas.  Each hunter is allowed only one animal.  The season will end if the quota is reached earlier.

Meanwhile, officials say the number of hunters carrying whitetails across the Mackinac Bridge is down from last year.  Monday morning 3,349 successful hunters had paid the toll — 36 percent lower than the 5,266 deer counted at the same time last year.

DNR officials say hunting across the region has declined, mostly due to a rough winter last year.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
