Tribes negotiating gaming compact

LANSING, MI (AP)--   Six American Indian tribes that operate 14 gambling halls in Michigan are negotiating a new compact with the state before the existing 20-year deal expires on Saturday.

Governor's spokesman Dave Murray tells the Detroit Free Press that "everything is on the table," and he's "optimistic the discussions will be productive."

Sean Reed is a lawyer for the Saginaw Chippewa Tribe in Mount Pleasant. He says negotiations are ongoing, but doesn't want to comment on the nature of the talks.

Even though the compact expires in a matter of days, it doesn't mean casinos will be shut down if a deal isn't reached by the deadline. The original compact says the current compact stays in place until a new one is worked out.
