LANSING, MI (MPRN)-- Petitions will start circulating Wednesday that would again give state officials the legal right to hold wolf hunts in Michigan.
There’s already a petition campaign to reject the current wolf hunt law.
Monday the Board of State Canvassers approved wording for the petition, which is backed by Michigan hunting groups.
Drew YoungeDyke is with Citizens for Professional Wildlife Management. He says they want to collect enough signatures to put proposal in the hands of state lawmakers by late Spring.
“Because if they don’t do anything with it, it will end up on the general election ballot. So we want to make sure we give them the full time that they need. So we will begin immediately,” he says.
The Michigan legislature has twice approved bills that allow wolf hunts in parts of Michigan, but those laws face petition challenges.
It’s possible that next November Michigan voters will vote on three referendums on wolf hunting – two against and one in favor.
At least 17 wolves have been killed in the Upper Peninsula wolf hunt that began November 15th.
