MARQUETTE, MI--   Michigan’s public universities contribute about $24 billion to the state’s economy.

That’s according to a new report from the Anderson Economic Group.  The report analyzed each schools spending, earnings and employment and found that they are responsible for more than 120,000 full-time equivalent jobs statewide.

The study found 35,000 Northern Michigan University alumni live in the state.  The 2012 data also indicates NMU spent more than $4.5 million dollars on instruction and academic support in Michigan; $26.2 million on room and board; and provided 1,290 jobs.

The report also found that the 1.3 million public university alumni who live in Michigan earned $47 billion in wages and salaries in 2012.  And total enrollment in public universities rose 4 percent from 2003 to 2012.

The study was commissioned by the Presidents Council, State Universities of Michigan.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
