RHINELANDER, WI (AP)-- Thousands of homeowners in far northern Wisconsin are being asked to leave their faucets running 24 hours a day to prevent water pipes and sewer lines from freezing.
A WAOW-TV report says the 9,000 Rhinelander residents won't be charged for the extra water usage.
City water superintendent Tim Kingman says the move is due to severe winter conditions. Temperatures in the area are expected to be below zero for much of the week.
Kingman says homeowners should leave a stream of water about the size of a pencil point running. He says it's the best way to reduce the number of expensive thawing operations.
He says people should keep the water running only as long as colder weather conditions persist.
