HANCOCK, MI (AP)--   An autopsy has found that smoke inhalation caused the death of a 50-year-old Hancock man who assaulted his girlfriend and set his house on fire.

The attack happened around 5 p.m. Friday in Hancock.

Houghton County medical examiner Dr. Dawn Nulf said Tuesday that Dennis Foreman died from breathing smoke in the fire that he set.

Police say Foreman assaulted his girlfriend before starting the blaze. Sheriff's deputies entered the house with shields and found him and the woman.

Authorities say emergency crews took both to Portage Health, where Foreman was declared dead and the woman was treated for a head injury and released.
