Millions awarded in sewer grants

LANSING, MI--   Seven Upper Peninsula communities will receive part of $97 million in grants and loans from the Department of Environmental Quality for sewer maintenance.

The Storm Water, Asset Management and Wastewater program provides funding to fix and upgrade aging sewer systems.

The DEQ announced Wednesday that 91 communities around the state will get money.  In the U.P. that includes:

Ironwood Township:  279,950

City of Manistique:  715,037

Forsyth Township:  195,665

Marenisco Township:  122,395

Village of Powers:  188,904

Bessemer Township:  361,791

City of Kingsford:  589,438

Department of Environmental Quality Director Dan Wyant says Michigan's sewer infrastructure is aging and heavy rains are taxing water treatment facilities, allowing raw sewage into the environment. The goal is to provide funding so communities can plan for infrastructure maintenance and improvements.
