Benishek tries to save ROTC programs

WASHINGTON, D.C.--   U.S. Representative Dan Benishek has co-authored an amendment that would prevent ROTC programs from being terminated too quickly.

Last fall the Army notified 13 schools—including Northern Michigan University—that their ROTC programs were being cut due to financial considerations.  Benishek says the under-performing schools were given the criteria upon which they’re being judged only this past January, while the Army is set to release recommendations for those programs next month.

Along with Congressman John Barrow of Georgia, Benishek has offered an amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2015.

It would give ROTC programs until 2020 to improve recruitment and graduation rates before termination is recommended.
