GLADSTONE, MI--   The U.S. Forest Service is studying the road system within the Hiawatha National Forest.

Officials want to identify roads that provide access to the public and forest management activities, minimize environmental impacts and can be maintained within a budget.

The Forest Service intends to use public input in its assessment of the positive, negative, and neutral qualities of the Forest’s 2,000 miles of roadway.  Four open houses will be held to gather stakeholder comment.

Forest Supervisor Jo Reyer says the public comment will help officials identify a minimum road system that serves the needs of the public and the Forest Service at a cost that can be maintained over time.

The open houses will be held from 3-6 p.m. on the following dates:

June 11:        St. Ignace District Office

June 12:       Sault Ste. Marie District Office

June 18:       Rapid River District Office

June 23:       Munising District Office
