GREEN BAY, WI (AP)-- Some changes are in store for Wisconsin deer hunters in the upcoming season.
In an effort to increase the herd that has been reduced by two harsh winters, hunters will only be allowed to shoot bucks in 19 northern and central counties.
WLUK-TV reports the Natural Resources Board adopted the change at a meeting in Green Bay Wednesday. Department of Natural Resources ecologist Kevin Wallenfang told board members about 40 percent of the fawns in the agency's northern study area were lost to malnutrition this past winter. That's up from 33 percent in 2013 and 6 percent in 2012.
Adult deer mortality has ranged between 7 percent and 15 percent over the last three years.
