MARQUETTE, MI-- The DNR wants anglers to be on the lookout for clipped Chinook salmon in Lake Superior.
In 2012, fisheries biologists began stocking fish without adipose fins. They wanted to track the number of salmon caught that originated in fish hatcheries as opposed to natural reproduction. Now two years old, the Chinook will begin showing up in fish populations.
The adipose fin is a small, fleshy lobe found on the back of the fish, just forward of the tail fin. Data on clipped fish found will be collected by creel clerks, who will interact with anglers at landings and other fishing locations.
