LANSING, MI (AP)-- Federal officials say that Michigan is getting $1.13 million from the Land and Water Conservation Fund for outdoor recreation and conservation efforts.
U.S. Interior Secretary Sally Jewell announced the funding Tuesday as part of $43.38 million being distributed nationwide.
Offshore oil and gas royalties support the Land and Water Conservation Fund. Michigan U.S. Sens. Carl Levin and Debbie Stabenow praised the grants Tuesday.
Levin says the aid will help Michigan make its public land, park and water resources "available for public enjoyment now and for generations to come."
Stabenow says hunting, fishing and snowmobiling are vital to Michigan's economy besides being part of the state's way of life.
The fund has supported about 42,000 projects over 50 years. It expires next year unless Congress reauthorizes it.
