NORWAY, MI (AP)-- Two Upper Peninsula fire departments have been awarded federal grants of more than $200,000 each.
U.S. Senators Carl Levin and Debbie Stabenow of Michigan say Sugar Island Township in Chippewa County will receive about $209,000 and Norway in Dickinson County will get nearly $240,000 from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
The money comes from the vehicle acquisition section of FEMA's firefighters grant program. It will help the departments buy equipment such as pumpers, tankers or ambulances.
Fire departments compete nationally for the federal funds in various categories. Peers from fire and EMS organizations evaluate the applications.
