Grants awarded for MI sewage projects

LANSING, MI--   The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality is awarding grants to 115 municipalities through its Stormwater, Asset Management, and Wastewater—or SAW—program.  Six grants are going to U.P. communities.

The money will be used for project planning and design, management plans, testing, and the use of innovative technology.  Officials say the program aims to protect the state’s water quality by helping municipalities plan for sewer system maintenance.

This second round of SAW grants totals $91 million.  A portion of the funding will go to the following U.P. communities:

City of Kingsford $589,439

Village of Powers $188,904

Township of Marenisco $122,395

Township of Forsyth $195,665

City of Manistique $715,037

Charter Township of Ironwood $279,950

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
