REXTON, MI (AP)-- A Canadian company has submitted a revised application to develop a limestone mine and processing facility near Rexton in Mackinac County.
The Michigan Department of Natural Resources said Wednesday that Graymont Inc. wants mining privileges on about 10,360 acres of state-owned land. But it's proposing to buy significantly less state land than its first application sought in November 2013.
Instead, the company seeks an easement for surface use on a planned 7,260-acre underground mining location, plus ownership of additional acreage through purchase or land swaps with the state.
Some area residents say they'd welcome the jobs and economic boost, while others worry about damage to the environment and their quality of life.
A public meeting will be held before DNR Director Keith Creagh announces his decision.
