Group wants DHS oversight to continue

LANSING, MI (AP)--   The group that forced the state of Michigan to improve its child-welfare system is vigorously opposed to ending court oversight.

In a sharply worded response, Children's Rights says releasing the Department of Human Services from a 2011 agreement would place children at risk. The group says the state has made progress but still hasn't complied with many conditions.

The state is asking a judge to close the case or at least modify the agreement because 79 percent of goals have been met. A hearing is set for next Wednesday, the first since the department said in December it wants to be released.

A monitor has been tracking foster care, child protection and health care since 2008. The agreement was rewritten in 2011 after the department's poor performance.
