MPSC says Presque Isle power plant has to stay open for U.P. customers

LANSING, MI--   The Michigan Public Service Commission wants Wisconsin Electric Power Company to explain how it can serve its customers if the Presque Isle Power Plant in Marquette is shut down.

In a court order Tuesday the MPSC directed the utility to show cause why it shouldn’t be prohibited from retiring the plant.

Wisconsin Electric has been ordered to appear at a prehearing conference February 5 in the commission’s Lansing office to explain how it intends to fulfill its obligations to its customers, including the Empire and Tilden mines.

Under a proposed plan from four companies the plant would be sold to Upper Peninsula Power Company no later than July.  The mines would continue to purchase power from Presque Isle, but the plant still faces retirement in 2020.

Nicole was born near Detroit but has lived in the U.P. most of her life. She graduated from Marquette Senior High School and attended Michigan State and Northern Michigan Universities, graduating from NMU in 1993 with a degree in English.
